Job Summary:
The Chief Engineer is responsible for supervising and monitoring systems, machinery, and equipment aboard a fleet of river transport vessels, ensuring their readiness and optimal performance.

Atlantic Ferries commenced operations in October 2007 as the concessionaire for the Public River Transport Service for passengers, light and heavy vehicles, and freight between Setúbal and the Troia Peninsula.
With a fleet comprising two ferries and two catamarans, Atlantic Ferries has, over its 14 years of operation, transported more than 15 million people and 3.5 million vehicles.
About the Role
The Chief Engineer is responsible for supervising and monitoring systems—particularly control and alarm systems—as well as the operation of machinery and equipment, ensuring their readiness for service.
Main Responsibilities
\- Ensure compliance with legal provisions applicable to the role, the code of conduct, the SGI policy, and current company standards and procedures;
\- Monitor operational parameters and advise the captain on optimal use of main engine controls; assist in maneuvering operations during vessel departure and arrival;
\- Maintain machinery and equipment in good condition and operational status aboard vessels; implement cleaning and preventive maintenance activities; complete defined service logs and/or records;
\- Report anomalies, failures, and/or deficiencies occurring during service to the captain and maintenance team, supporting troubleshooting or repairs involving machinery or other equipment under their responsibility;
\- Report situations that may constitute deviations from the SGI policy, whether during normal operations or emergencies;
\- Actively participate in implementing and maintaining the SGI to continuously improve environmental performance, service quality, and accident prevention.
Qualifications and Competencies
\- Professional Certificate: First or Second Class Marine Engineer;
\- STCW III/3 certification;
\- Proficiency in English;
\- Good user-level computer skills: MS Office;
\- Results-oriented mindset and problem-solving ability;
\- Strong communication and interpersonal skills;
\- Flexibility regarding working hours;
\- Residence in the Setúbal area (preferred).
