Considered by many to be one of Mário Saa’s most original and important works. According to the Chronological Dictionary of Portuguese Authors (Vol. III, Europa-América Publications, Mem Martins, 1994): «[...] Within this diversity of expressive transitions [between the cosmopolitanism of Orpheu and the return of the agrarian spirit in Presença], a creativity emerges—one distinctly marked by modernism, yet refusing to reject the roots of tradition and even a certain taste for archaizing suggestion. [...]» The same dictionary further notes: «[...] an incursion—albeit unconvincing—into a sociologism purportedly grounded in racial theory [...]».
