This work reveals the history and origin of this fruit variety, first identified in the region in 1836—nearly as significant to the West Region as wine production—and also details the main production centers within the West Region, including numerous recipes featuring Pêra Rocha as the primary ingredient. Altogether, across the West Region and further south—including the municipalities of Mafra, Torres Vedras, Lourinhã, Bombarral, Cadaval, and Alcobaça—Pêra Rocha cultivation occupies a total of 10,000 hectares of orchards. The book also visits 13 of the most important estates where this fruit is grown: 4 in the municipality of Torres Vedras, 3 in Bombarral, 2 in Cadaval, and another 2 in Alcobaça, plus 1 each in Mafra and Lourinhã. In Torres Vedras, the four estates mentioned are Quinta da Albergaria and Quinta do Bom Sucesso—both located in the parish of Campelos—Quinta do Maxial, whose registered office is in the parish of Ramalhal, and Quinta da Viscondessa, situated in the municipality of Turcifal. At a time when returning to agriculture is widely discussed, it is essential to understand the potential of the region where we live—making this work fundamental to gaining deeper insight into the West Region’s economic identity.
