At that time, the municipality encompassed the entire coastal strip between Porto and the Ave River, stretching from the sea inland to a line of low hills—still distinct from adjacent flatlands—running from Rio Tinto along the eastern boundaries of Alfena, Covelas, and Bougados. Until 1902, the municipal seat was located in Castelo da Maia, in a building now repurposed for other uses.
