Job Summary:
The Senior Geologist serves as a technical reference in geology and engineering geology, providing specialized contributions to complex and high-risk projects.
Key Highlights:
1. Serving as a technical reference in geology and engineering geology
2. Leading and reviewing complex geological studies
3. Coordinating multidisciplinary project teams
**Purpose of the Role**
The Senior Geologist serves as a technical reference in geology and engineering geology, providing specialized contributions to complex, diverse, and high-risk projects.
The role ensures reliable site characterization, including geotechnical parameterization (of soils or rock masses), management of geological risk and uncertainty impacting the project, and collaboration in developing foundation, retaining, and excavation solutions.
**Responsibilities**
* Lead and review complex geological studies and site investigations, including, where necessary and applicable, defining and overseeing geotechnical and geophysical exploration campaigns and their associated tests (in situ and laboratory).
* Develop and validate geological models and interpretations through the preparation of interpretive profiles and reliable geotechnical parameterization of soils and rock masses.
* Provide specialized advice on risks and uncertainties associated with ground conditions.
* Coordinate geological inputs within multidisciplinary project teams, ensuring clear communication of geological information to geotechnical and structural engineering teams (for the design of civil works, building foundations, peripheral retaining structures, etc.).
* Review and approve technical documentation and reports.
* Provide technical support during construction, including managing unforeseen geological conditions.
* Develop tools, methodologies, and automation, and explore new software to continuously improve efficiency and productivity.
* Classify materials for earthworks (excavability, ripability, and suitability for reuse in embankments).
* Act as the technical interface with clients and external entities, where applicable.
* Support Technical Leads in maintaining structural standards and methodologies.
* Serve as team lead for the discipline, coordinating the technical team and acting as the primary point of contact with the project manager to ensure compliance with the project requirements for this discipline.
**Qualifications**
* Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Geology, Engineering Geology, or related fields.
**Knowledge**
* Specialized knowledge in geology and engineering geology.
* Advanced understanding of site investigation strategies and risk-based approaches.
* Proficiency in standards for geological interpretation and report writing.
* In-depth knowledge of geological risks associated with construction.
* Ability to integrate geological data into geotechnical and structural design.
* Excellent technical report writing and structuring skills, ensuring clarity, rigor, and conciseness in documentation produced, both in Portuguese and English (written and spoken fluency in English is highly valued).
* Geotechnical judgment and sensitivity, as well as advanced capability in statistical treatment and kinematic analysis of rock masses using Dips (Rocscience), with autonomy to define critical discontinuity sets and extract reliable design parameters for integration into geotechnical design.
* Valued experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software and 3D geological modeling tools such as Leapfrog or similar.
* Broad knowledge of exploration planning and specification of required tests (both in situ and laboratory) to best support projects according to intersected materials and respective geotechnical solutions.
**Competencies**
* **Technological Literacy –** Ability to use, understand, and adapt to digital and technological tools relevant to the role.
* **Resilience, Flexibility, and Agility** – Ability to cope with change, pressure, and challenges, rapidly adapting to new priorities, contexts, and project demands.
* **Curiosity and Lifelong Learning** – Continuous interest in learning, updating skills, and exploring new technical, digital, or organizational approaches, oriented toward continuous improvement.
* **Motivation –** Ability to self-motivate, understand one’s own strengths and development areas, and act intentionally to continuously evolve.
* **Collaboration –** Ability to work effectively with others, sharing information, responsibilities, and common goals.
* **Problem Solving –** Ability to take ownership of emerging challenges and address them in a structured, solution-oriented manner.
* **Analytical Thinking –** Ability to analyze data, technical information, and contextual factors to support evidence-based decisions.
* **Creative and Innovative Thinking** – Ability to generate novel ideas and innovative solutions while staying current on industry trends, technologies, and innovative approaches.
* **Autonomy –** Ability to act independently, with ownership and accountability.
* **Coordination –** Ability to align activities, people, and disciplines to ensure alignment and efficiency.
* **Decision Making** – Ability to analyze relevant information, assess risks and impacts against the Organization’s strategy, and assume responsibility for decisions made.
**What We Offer**
* Salary commensurate with demonstrated competencies throughout the process: €38,000/year – €45,000/year
* Career development aligned with your aspirations, competencies, and the company’s strategy.
* Highly challenging projects.
* Integration into small, agile teams where your voice matters.
* 25 days off (22 vacation days + Carnival + Birthday + Christmas Eve), with possibility to increase to 28 days based on attendance.
