And these provide ideal signal pickup regardless of how the performer positions themselves in front of the microphone. But what sets it apart from other microphones? The proximity effect often plays a role, as performers cannot always stand rigidly in front of the microphone on stage. Yet even slightly more distant signals struggle to remain consistently assertive, since performance conditions often do not allow for that here either. Thus, some singers who nearly touch the capsule with their lips either sound overly "muddy" or become too quiet, and their voice sounds overly thin if they are not perfectly centered in front of the microphone.
