The town of Lousã is located 28 km from Coimbra and is surrounded by imposing mountains dotted with some of the most charming schist villages. The Serra da Lousã is a true natural paradise hidden in the interior of Portugal — a place of stories, fine gastronomy, and above all, breathtaking natural landscapes. What to visit: Schist Villages: Talasnal; Cerdeira; Casal Novo; Candal; Chiqueiro The Schist Villages Network comprises 27 villages distributed across the interior of the Centro Region of Portugal, five of which are located in the municipality of Lousã. These small settlements collectively represent the region’s tourism potential, reflected in architecture, gastronomy, and traditions. For hiking enthusiasts, there are over 600 km of officially certified pedestrian trails. Mountain biking lovers will be delighted by the wide range of trails with varying difficulty levels, anchored at the MTB Centers. The river beach of Senhora da Piedade "Burgo" captivates visitors arriving after navigating the winding two-kilometre mountain road. In addition to being a pilgrimage site for the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Piedade and the hermitages, the entire "Burgo" — especially the schist-built Arouce Castle — guides visitors through the history of the municipality. Below the castle, the river beach makes excellent use of the waters of the Ribeira de São João for bathing activities. It holds the "Blue Flag" award, developed by the Blue Flag Association of Europe (ABAE) with technical support from the Portuguese Environment Agency. The Trevim Swing, built by the project "Isto é Lousã", is located at Alto de Trevim — the highest point of the Serra da Lousã. At an altitude of 1,200 metres, this giant wooden swing is the ideal spot for taking original Instagram photographs.
