It is the seat of a municipality covering an area of 82.21 km² and having a population of 63,408 (2011 census). The city has expanded southward into Vila do Conde, forming an urban agglomeration of 100,000 inhabitants—the seventh largest in Portugal and the third largest in the Norte Region. It is one of the urban poles of northern Portugal and serves as a central hub for the neighboring municipalities of Vila do Conde and Esposende. The earliest settlements on its territory date back 4,000–6,000 years. Around 900 B.C., regional instability led to the founding of a walled city, Cividade de Terroso, which developed maritime trade routes with classical antiquity civilizations. Modern Póvoa de Varzim emerged after the Roman Republic’s conquest of Cividade around 138 B.C.; fishing and fish-processing units soon developed, forming the foundation of the local economy. By the 11th century, the fishing industry and fertile farmlands formed the basis of a feudal lordship, and Varzim was fiercely contested among local and regional lords and the early kings of Portugal—leading to the establishment of the municipality in 1308 and its subsequent subjection to medieval monastic authority a few years later. Póvoa de Varzim regained prominence during the Age of Discovery, owing to the expertise and wealth of its shipbuilders and seafarers, who engaged in global trade along complex commercial routes. By the 17th century, the fish-processing industry received renewed impetus, and later, Póvoa became the dominant fishing port in northern Portugal. The city of Póvoa de Varzim has been a recognized seaside resort for three centuries—the most popular in northern Portugal—fostering an influential literary culture and patronage of music and theater. It is one of the few legally authorized gambling zones in Portugal and hosts significant textile and food-processing industries. The city maintains a distinct cultural identity, a rich seafood-based cuisine, and ancient traditions such as Poveira siglas (traditional fishermen’s symbols), the agricultural technique of masseiras, and local festivals.
