Piccolo Action Figure Dragon Ball Z 1996 13 cm tall Piccolo is a fictional character from Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball franchise. Piccolo first appears as the reincarnation of the villain Piccolo Daimaoh in Chapter 167 of the manga, "The Problem at the Tenkaichi Budokai," originally published in 1988 in Weekly Shonen Jump, establishing him as a demon and rival to the series’ protagonist, Goku. Later, however, it is revealed that he descends from the alien Namekuseijin race. Piccolo is treated as male, but as a Namekuseijin, he is actually sexless. After being defeated by Goku, he allies with him to confront new threats. He also trains Goku’s first son, Gohan, forming an exceptionally strong bond with the boy. Creation and conception Piccolo was created by Akira Toriyama when he wanted an antagonist who would be a truly evil character. Prior to Piccolo’s creation, nearly all villains in the series were considered overly cute. Upon creating Piccolo, Toriyama realized his appearance became one of the story’s most compelling moments, and Piccolo became one of his favorite characters. Although Akira regarded the trope of a villain turning into a hero as cliché, he remarked that he still felt emotionally moved while drawing Piccolo—despite his intimidating appearance, Piccolo evolved into a remarkably likable creature.
