Teixeira Dias Publisher: Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation Dimensions: 23 × 15 cm Pages: 162 Author: Scientific Field: Molecular Physical Chemistry Profession: Retired Professor, Science Communicator My scientific research field is Molecular Physical Chemistry, particularly Quantum Chemistry and Molecular Spectroscopy. My main research interests have addressed a range of topics in molecular structure, such as molecular mechanics, construction of force fields, conformational analysis, internal rotation, intermolecular and intramolecular interactions, hydrogen bonding, oxygen-to-sulfur substitution, H/D and D/H exchange, and hydration/dehydration effects. The methods employed to investigate these topics were primarily Raman and infrared spectroscopies, complemented by ab initio and DFT molecular calculations, ¹H and ¹³C NMR, laser-induced fluorescence, absorption spectroscopy, Raman resonance, small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), and temperature-dependent studies—used whenever appropriate and available through intra-departmental or international collaborations. The systems studied encompassed a wide variety of compounds, including cyclodextrins—particularly α-cyclodextrin— inclusion complexes in aqueous solutions and electrolytic effects, inclusion compounds, cyclodextrin-micelle interactions, and methylated and unsubstituted cyclodextrins. While teaching chemistry to first-year science and engineering university students, my research interests also extended to science education, with special emphasis on student questioning and its relevance to the quality of learning in chemistry.
