Job Summary: We are seeking a Data Engineer for a data transformation and SAS workload migration project to an Azure Synapse cloud platform. Key Highlights: 1. Work at the interface between business and engineering teams Data Engineer — SAS Migration Location: Lisbon, Portugal Model: Hybrid — minimum of 2 days/week on-site Seniority: Mid-Level Experience: 2-3+ years Languages: Portuguese and English Role Context IRISTECH is recruiting a Data Engineer — SAS Migration to join a data transformation project in a financial context. The project aims to migrate and modernize analytical workloads currently developed in SAS, transferring them to a cloud data platform running on Azure Synapse. We seek a professional with strong SQL, Python, and Data Engineering skills, capable not only of migrating existing code but also of analyzing, challenging, and simplifying legacy logic to ensure more efficient, scalable, and cloud-native solutions. Key Responsibilities * Analyze existing SAS queries and logic developed in SAS Query Builder; * Understand the technical logic and objectives of existing processes; * Migrate SAS workloads to SQL and Python; * Review and simplify complex, outdated, or redundant logic; * Optimize queries for execution on Azure Synapse; * Apply best practices for data filtering and access, avoiding unnecessary scans; * Consider cloud performance and cost optimization; * Collaborate closely with business analysts and engineering teams; * Transform requirements and existing logic into efficient technical solutions; * Document and track developed solutions; * Support the gradual decommissioning of SAS workloads. Required Experience and Skills * 2-3+ years of experience in Data Engineering or similar roles; * Solid experience in SQL, including query optimization; * Solid experience in Python; * Practical experience with Azure Synapse; * Experience in cloud data environments; * Ability to analyze and understand existing code/logic; * Ability to identify opportunities for simplification and optimization; * Strong analytical ability and attention to detail; * Good communication skills and ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams; * Portuguese and English. Preferred Qualifications * Prior experience with SAS; * Knowledge of Power BI; * Experience in insurance, banking, or financial services; * Experience in data platform migration or modernization projects; * Practical experience optimizing cost and performance in Azure Synapse. Ideal Profile We seek a hands-on, analytical, and critical thinker who does not merely perform a direct translation of SAS code into SQL/Python. The ideal candidate should be able to examine logic developed over several years, determine what must be retained, identify what can be simplified, and build a more efficient solution for a cloud environment. Technical autonomy, the ability to question existing solutions, and ease in bridging business and engineering teams are essential.
