We are in the Age of Discovery, and the greatest Portuguese cities are thriving as never before: Lisbon, Porto, and especially Coimbra, home to its famed University. As head of one of the city’s leading Houses, you realize that this rapid growth is also creating some insecurity among the citizens. You therefore place your men at the city’s disposal to protect the most important councilors, merchants, clergymen, and academics. After all, you wish to earn favor from all of them—and not everyone can be swayed by money. There are several ways to win. Whether players focus on amassing wealth, recruiting new guards, advancing their academic careers, improving relations with nearby monasteries, or investing in discovery expeditions—in the end, only those who uncover and exploit the various synergies each game offers will emerge victorious. Above all, the struggle for Coimbra’s most valuable citizens remains thrilling, thanks to a special dice system in which each die not only determines turn order and bribery costs but also specifies the type of reward players will receive. After four rounds, the game ends, and the player with the most points wins. This Coimbra edition is the Portuguese-language version, with rulebooks in Portuguese; although it is not shrink-wrapped, it has never been played and remains brand new.
