The sound conveys a sense of flow and spatial separation around the instruments, especially with well-recorded music. I played ‘She’s Already Made Up My Mind’ by Lyle Lovett from his Joshua Judges Ruth album [MCA], and the separation among those instruments, the clean extension (without excessive brightness) of the percussion and angrily-strummed guitar, and the depth of that bass are excellent. The dynamic range of this track demonstrates just how good the MS III can be. The design still employs a TAS1020B chip as the USB receiver, with a Burr- Brown PCM1794 as the DAC; however, whereas the MS II used a single output chip, the newer model uses three chips. It is precisely this three-chip output stage that represents the major difference and elevates the performance of the MS III. The AudioQuest Dragonfly is now the obvious rival. In fact, they target entirely different users; the MS III is a USB soundcard designed to connect your computer to an audio system, whereas the Dragonfly is a USB headphone DAC/amp with potential for domestic audio use—provided the correct cable (not included). The sound of both units differs too; the Dragonfly sounds forward and very ‘now’, while the MS III emphasizes refinement and natural dynamics.
