The fortress of Torres Vedras was captured in 1148 by the forces of Afonso Henriques, whose tomb lies in Coimbra at the Monastery of Santa Cruz. It reportedly withstood an eleven-day siege in 1184 by a detachment of Muslim troops stationed around Santarém—an assault that ultimately failed. Later, it received honors from King Dinis of Portugal ("The Farmer"), who reigned over Portugal and the Algarve from 1279 until his death.
