Description

Rising epidemics in contemporary society—the origins of hatred and anger—stem directly from a lack of patience, which in turn inhibits humanity’s spiritual growth. Aware of the healing and regenerative power of love, compassion, and tolerance, Buddhist doctrine—as well as other major world religions—bases its practices upon these qualities. Inspired by the classic text underpinning the activities of bodhisattvas—'A Guide to the Bodhisattva’s Way of Life'—'The Power of Patience' conveys a set of teachings that can be integrated by all those seeking self-improvement. Advocating the practice of patience through constant interaction with others and the world, the Dalai Lama thus reveals, throughout this work and through his own life journey, the power of tolerance as an antidote to the two destructive forces of hatred and anger—a power that, ultimately, fosters peace in the world. His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso was born in 1935 into a peasant family in a small village in northeastern Tibet. At just two years old, he was recognized as the reincarnation of his predecessor. The recognition ceremony for the XIV Dalai Lama took place on February 22, 1940, in Lhasa, the capital of Tibet. Ten years later, when China invaded Tibetan territory, His Holiness—only sixteen years old and still nine years away from completing his religious studies—was compelled to assume full political authority. In March 1959, during the Tibetan People’s National Uprising against Chinese military occupation, he was forced into exile. Since then, he has resided in the Himalayas, in Dharamsala, India—the official seat of the Central Tibetan Administration in exile, a constitutional democracy established in 1963. Unlike his predecessors—who never traveled to the West—the XIV Dalai Lama continues his global travels, appealing for kindness, compassion, environmental stewardship, and, above all, world peace. In addition to an extensive bibliography, His Holiness has received numerous honorary awards across the countries where he has delivered speeches—the most prestigious being the Nobel Peace Prize, awarded to him in 1989.
