Strangely because the talk about legislation, punishment and policing is permanently present in a world where everybody seems to agree on a simple basic premise: you have the right to defend yourself when attacked. But then the big question immediately appears... when are you attacked? Is a threat an attack? Is the possibility of an attack enough to justify a response? Is a behaviour against my sense of morality an attack? The metaphysics of Harm and threat try to understand onthologically what is to be attacked since its political implications are obvious: violence often appears as result of a previous perception of being under attack or threatened, and therefore without a proper understanding and agreement (wishfully-thinking) on the nature of attack and threat, seems impossible to erradicate conflicts and wars. In European history, most nations attack each other because they permanently feel threatened by each other. Every nation will justify its offensives as a necessary act of preemptive self deffense. So the topic has millions of deaths over its tragic shoulders. Human relations at the individual level seem to unveil similar patterns. And yet. tragically, we are, WE ARE vulnerable, fragile, damageable... and therefore, easily threatened.
